I kind of feel that the holodeck from Star Trek The Next Generation is a better thing to compare VR to since it's basically the ultimate stage of VR. For VR to be truly believable you have to be able to touch and feel the virtual objects whilst also believing that they're real and it also needs the capability to make the user feel like they're somewhere that could be miles long in distance; the holodeck could do this perfectly and was even capable of replicating smell. Now just to ruin the magic a little: Star Trek The Next Generation was a TV show so obviously this was all done with actors and sets with very basic special effects used mainly for transition sequences but we are getting closer and closer to the kind of technology that could make the holodeck real. Really the only difficult parts would be making it possible to physically touch and feel the holograms without wearing any special haptic gear, being able to make a relatively small room feel like it spans for many miles, and being able to replicate smells, plus there's the matter of being able to perfectly recreate people to the point that it feels like you're talking to an exact clone.
